Terrorism Reigns Supreme!

August 11th, 2006 | by MadHacktress |

Every day the people who would like to strike fear in to the hearts of Americans win battles. There are countless thousands of people working on new and more impressive ways to beef up security based on the threat of terror. Billions of dollars are spent each year, placing a larger and larger burden on the economy.

All of which are victories.

Terrorists don’t count victories only by bodies. We call those people serial killers. Terrorists rank up points by striking fear in to people. Making people change the way they live their lives.

Each time I consider the plight of terrorists, their aims and the things that clearly show that they are winning the war on terror is think of alcoholism. Odd, perhaps, but consider that alcoholics are driven by their desire, their need for alcohol. They impair their lives, their social function, jobs, it affects them psychologically and physically.

Now think about us… the people who are the so-called victims of terror. Do we not inflict ourselves the same way? We impair the way that we work, the way that we interact, our psychology is totally screwed up (fear’ll do that do ya). We’ve all got a bad case of terrorism.

We have done this to ourselves. We’ve taken it too far. Like alcoholics don’t know when to stop drinking… we don’t know when to quit being afraid. No measure of security is too much. No infringement on the rights of the people is too great. No lost liberties are too costly.

The news has been rife with examples over the past weeks.

For me, it started with the permanent closure of the crown of the Statue of Liberty. Liberty had been open to tourists since at least 1916, when the torch was closed due to structural safety concerns. The crown remained open until September 11th.

Now we have the banning of liquids on airline flights. Liquids. As in water, for goodness’ sake. I just don’t even know how much farther it will go? Maybe they’ll soon realize that the one thing that all these attack plots have in common is that people are going to execute them.

Let’s ban people on airplanes, too.

That’d nip it all right in the bud.

I don’t have the answer to all this. I can’t tell the world to stop being so reactionary and to just calm down. We didn’t have a ban on water on flights before yesterday and they still managed to thwart the evil plot. Doesn’t that say that current measures are working? Why do we need to take them one step farther? Why encroach on people’s liberties that much more.

Should being able to bring water on to an airplane truly be a luxury?

Is that the kind of world that you want to live in?

The terrorist make the threats, but we decide how to react. We are the ones who are changing our own way of life - not them. They will continue to squash our civil liberties by coming up with new and exciting ways and means to make us decide to give up yet another freedom.

That’s what it’s all about, folks. It’s about us giving up our freedoms. They are not doing this to us. We are doing it to ourselves.

I makes me sad and disappointed.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.

I can’t wait until I have to remove my clothes and pack them in a bag for stowage in the hold and then fly in a disposable paper cover-all.

That is awesome. A flying gown just like the kind that the doctor makes you wear before he sticks things in uncomfortable places.

There’s an analogy there, but it’s just too easy.

Great write-up! My thoughts EXACTLY. We have lost many freedoms, and we will continue to lose more - as long as idiot conservative politicians think they can win a war against an emotional state (terror). I’m actually sickened by the dubbing of one group of people as terrorists, while they may have been “freedom fighters”, or maybe “guerillas” when we supported them in the past. When that support even included selling drugs for guns, this dubbing becomes even more sickening.

The problem is not realy the water itself. It is the ability to put a liquid in a bottle and then reseal it to make it appear that it is unopened and give the appearance of water. Look inside most purses. There are some dangerous things in there.
There are some very common household items that can be dangerous when mixed with other items. While in the military, I recall laughing at a warning on a very common item that is used with a common beverage. It had a warning ” Do not store near heat - may explode. BTW, I know Terry personally from work, we disagree on a few things, but i think we still respect each others opinion. This is a very important topic to debate. I am a believer that these people that want to distroy the planes are a case of nutjobs that need to be killed. You can not reason or understand someone that wants to kill a non-believer. Now Iran is mentioning something about August 22. I hope this is a meaningless day, but if something does happen, the world will change ( and not for the better)

I love the idea. Naked airlines. Bring nothing. Wear nothing.

Have any of you flown since the new restrictions were put in place? I just got back from a week long trip to Las Vegas where I had to put up with these lovely new restrictions… It really was not that bad for the most part.

I don’t think the restrictions are nearly as full proof as they think they are though. When I was in line waiting to go through security in Las Vegas these girls from the Netherands were in front of me. They were calm, seemed bored and were looking all around. Then it suddenly occured to one of them that they must throw away their make-up and such. She quickly poked the other and they started talking a mile a minute and started digging through their bags. It is a good thing that the security line still had a good 30 minutes to go before they were up because it took close to that long for them to dig out all of their stuff. I guess some of it was pretty expensive and they were not about to throw it out so with one acting as a “look out” the other unzipped her jacket and began to fill her jacket and pants pockets and then stuffed the rest under her shirt and zipped up the jacket. She looked like she had put on a few pounds but really if you had not seen her before you would have no idea. The other did the same and then they went back to waiting to go through security. That got me thinking… Would they be caught? What would happen if they did get caught? Would people with guns jump out of nowhere and take them down? I thought for sure I was going to see a great show so I left a little extra room… Then the time came.. they pushed their bags into the x-ray machine… off go the shoes… and then the first one walks through the metal detectors, and…. NOTHING… the second goes through and still NOTHING. Hmmmm it is a good thing it is make-up and not liquid explosives!

That got me thinking even more.. how silly these restrictions are.. You can’t take water, yet they don’t check you for water so if you have it hidden on you they will never know.. Hell I could have had a stick of C4 attached to me and they would have never known!!

As well it is all good and fine to prevent water from going in… sure it is a “security risk”, but why they hell can’t you take a bottle of water you purchased in at the gate onto your plane? Do they really think someone could co-ordinate it enough to get a bottle of liquid explosives into a store, and thn arrange for the right person to buy it? Come on! That is just stupid!

They serve drinks on the plane… how do they know that is not going to contain a liquid explosive that explodes as soon as the can is opened???

I am glad I stood in line for 3 hours just for this.. ugh..

I’m still stuck on how none of the terrorists were Iraqi yet we pulled troops out of Afghanistan and sent them to Iraq. And now the Taliban is growing strong again. Logic please?
How bin Laden is Saudi, yet there’s no pressure on the Saudis to deal with him.
And why are we in Iraq again?
And the fear… maybe soon the flight attendants will have to change into their uniforms in front of guards so that “we know” the flight attendants aren’t trying to take explosives onto the plane.
And why are we in Iraq again?

Rome was built over several centuries, but burnt in one day. Most all of London burnt in 1666 from one ember of a hot coal local Bakers oven. Go figure, we humans are ignorant of other peoples cultures and beliefs. The king remarked “just piss on it”
