Canada’s Cuba Policy - If It Ain’t Broke…

August 2nd, 2006 | by MadHacktress |

Cuban-Canadians are calling for a tougher stance to be taken now that their former government seems in flux. The Cuban Canadian Foundation president spoke today saying that he felt former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, who was a life-long friend of Castro, made a "big mistake" putting his faith in the communist leader.

Castro served as a pallbearer at Trudeau’s funeral.

It will be interesting to see if governments do, in fact, shift their position on Cuba now that it seems that the opening is available. My own thoughts on the matter are that this is exactly the wrong time to make this kind of decision. If, in fact, Cuba’s government is changing then why chance hurting a future relationship based on the perception of Fidel Castro’s regime. If a kinder-gentler government ends up in power in Havana then wouldn’t we just be shooting ourselves in the foot?

My eyes will be on Steve throughout the development of this story (if, in fact, it goes anywhere - Fidel may be with us for another 20 years for all we know). With the recent handling of the Israel situation this really gives Steve a chance to make a statement.

Maintain the status-quo and prove that what you did with Israel is consistent with your view of world politics - each nation has its own self-governing rights.

Or change the Cuban-Canadian arrangement and prove to us all that you really are crossing the floor - that is, becoming a Republican.

For me, I like the Cuban-Canadian relationship partly because it sets Canada apart from our neighbours to the South and proves that there once was, even if there isn’t now, a distinctly Canadian Voice in world politics. More and more it seems like the Prime Minister just has another man’s hand shoved up his ass.

Oh, and Trudeau rocked, let’s face it.
