André Ouellet - Money Grubber Extraordinaire!
August 11th, 2006 | by MadHacktress |So, we all remember when André Ouellet resigned from his position at Canada Post. More importantly, we all rememer THAT André Ouellet resigned.
Resigned. As in took it upon himself to end his continued affiliation with Canada Post. Signed his name and dated a letter to his superior indicating that very fact.
Now how is it, that almost exactly 2 years later, the little bastard is trying to get more money out of the taxpayers for a job that he never performed.
Three point two million dollars. That’s what a resignation letter is worth to André Ouellet and that’s what he thinks that the people of Canada should cough up. He was just that fantastic a President of Canada Post that he is absolutely worth it.
Egad.
Before I go off on a rant about signing your name to a resignation letter and then later calling it being fired - let’s look at the break down of the coin for Mr. Ouellet. 936,815$ in lost salary, for a job he wasn’t performing that he resigned from. 77,461$ (higher than the average citizen’s gross earnings of any province - even Alberta) for bonus pay, annually, for each year 2003 to 2006 (for a total of 309,844$. Half-a-million bucks for damages to his precious reputation. And, of course, 416,362$ in severence pay (which he knew he wasn’t entitled to before he resigned). Among other things.
For those who aren’t aware, the reason that Mr. Ouellet is sitting out this round is due to the fact that he couldn’t account for just about 2 million dollars of taxpayer money that was classified under “hospitality expenses”. He played fast and loose with hiring rules in order to help his buddies get their foot in the door and he and helped to make sure that Liberal-friendly firms got business.
He got caught.
And he resigned for it.
R-E-S-I-G-N-E-D.
This is the part that I don’t get. The man put pen to paper and signed his John Hancock at the bottom of a page that said, “y’know, I don’t wanna work here no more”. It doesn’t matter if there was political pressure, it doesn’t matter if there were behind the scenes reasons for it. YOU signed the damnable letter and you’re bound by it. That is your ink on that page.
No one had a gun to his head demanding that he sign that paper, no one had him by the balls saying, “if you don’t sign it, we’re takin’ the boys”. He had absolutely no reason to sign that paper except that he wanted to. It was, at the time, in his best interests… and now he has to deal with the repercussions of those actions.
It irks me (surprised?) that these people feel that they can get away with this kind of thing. That they can take the taxpayers of the nation for this kind of money. Sure, it’s a dime per person but, then, if that’s no big deal… I’ll send y’all my address and we can fill my boots, too.
This sort of greed just grates on my last nerve. These people are paid huge amounts of money for what they do. His annual bonus is almost 11,000$ higher than the (nominal) per capita GDP of Alberta - Canada’s richest province. That’s just his damned bonus. There is something seriously wrong with that.
I hear people say that we have to pay them that way because of the expectations that are laid on them… oh? Really now… so, did Mr. Ouellet live up to your expectations? Was he everything you hoped for and more?
Where’s your dime?
