my question on the whole lebanesse isrewali conflict is if soldiers were kidnapped and killed on their own country would we not consider this an act of war? i would the problem with lebanonn is that you have hammas that is being helped by syria and iran you can not buy 200 + rockets on the black market. the lebanesse army has not been in south for over 20 years a country does have a right and respobilty to protect itself and citzens taking out the aspect of everyone hates bush jr would the isssue be so charged??? i thin not since iran and syria have called for the wiping of isreal of the map. I do not see this outrage when iusreali women and children die. Losses any losses are reggrettable. Not everyone is innocent for instance the un post that was shelled and four people were killed from different countries I am sorry for the loss and I am certian that no mistake was made my question is what made them shell the outpost i believe some one was giving information to the other side about troop movvements it has happend before in bosnia but we believe that everyone who wears a blue beret to be honest and nonjudgemental which is false we are all human and tempataion is huge

Up until today, there were only three countries (US, UK, Canada) supporting Israelis in killing of innocent women, children and civilians of Lebanon. After today's news of even UK backing off this apparent human tragedy and war crime, Canada is now the only country left. Yes ladies and gentleman, at this moment we live in the only country in the whole globe that its head of state hasn't yet condemns Israel or at least asked for Israeli restrain (somthing that even Bush has done). "A wise person does at once, what a fool does at last. Both do the same thing; only at different times." - Peace.

Turns out the "split" (Tues) is more like 77% in favor of neutrality. I was kinda thinkin' the 50/50 business was a, 'conservative', numbers game.

billg brings up an interesting point -- yes, we want a leader who stands up and speaks strongly on an issue. One who doesn't hide his true view or change direction when the heat comes. So i'd like to hear mr. Harpor's opinion on Iraq again and to have him explain why he would write an American newspaper, criticizing the national gov't to a foreign audience. Would he write another letter to a foreign audience now giving them his 'in hindsight' view -- and with the way the middle east is churning, that viewpoint could be relevant. Will his all-system's go approach to american foreign policy lead us to a possible conflict in Iran and Syria -- which are pressing issues and certainly need to be discussed and tackled - vis a ve their support and help for Hezzbollah and Hamas. Can we expect more strident words. And why am I more wishing that the world, not only Canada, would have someone of Lester Pearson's vision and courage to lead the way.

"We are an insignificant country on the world stage now"
- billg

I'll bet you dollars to donuts billy boy doesn't think the same thing about Israel.

Could you Israeli appologists get together and maybe have the less transparent types among you do the actual postings.

Well then they did say something...and.. it was a nothing statement.
Like I said, its split 50 - 50. Say nothing and half the population will agree...say something and half will disagree with what they said....like Yogi said.."its like deja-vu all over again"

Saying nothing is not better than saying something, anything really.

We aren't even a member of the world stage AT ALL if we say nothing, at least making a statement preserves our, your words, insigificance.

Canada is the only member of the G8 nations to not have taken a stance on the issue. The only mention of Canadian comment on the Qana matter (based on Google & Yahoo! News searches) is a statement from an unnamed member of Department of Foreign Affairs: "Canada remains concerned about the far reaching impact on civilians on the ongoing conflict in Lebanon."

So, let me get this right, Harper makes a stance that is going to cost him and he's parroting the US..thats rich. What he should have done was stand and condemn both sides and stick to our "insignicant voice" routine.....we become a more signicant country when the world see's whose side we are on instead of pandering to both sides..I'd rather have a PM willing to loose an election on what he believes in (Chretien and Iraq) then the rhetoric that normally comes out of the PM's office.

billg, "insignificant" though we may be... we are only relegated to such a position by our own actions. Canada does not need to be insignificant. It is pandering to external influences that make us insignificant. Losing the Canadian Voice in favour of parroting other (to be left unnamed) nations makes us irrelevent.
