Order of Canada on Sale on eBay!
December 30th, 2006 | by MadHacktress |The Order of Canada is a very special, very rare honour bestowed on very few Canadians who have served their country well - or are married to the Governor General. Right now, one of the earliest emblems of this honour is on sale on eBay. The current bid, as of this writing, is 10,900$CDN.
The Order of Canada is Canada’s highest civilian award. This particular award, given to Gustave Lanctot of Montreal in 1967, created him a member of the Order of Canada. Specifically he was given the Medal of Service, the lesser of the then-two stations of the Order; the greater station being Companion. In 1972 a third was created and all recipients of the Medal of Service became Officers of the Order.
Since the Medal of Service was only handed out for 5 years (Lanctot was amongst the first recipients of the honour) there are very few Medal of Service medals in existence. Recipients were encouraged to turn in their Medal of Service medals for Officer of the Order medals and so, many of the originals have been melted down.
The Constitution of the Order of Canada dictates that the medal can be handed down as an heirloom but cannot be sold. This one seems to have slipped through the cracks and made its way to an estate sale and is now up for grabs - I shutter to think - on eBay.
There are only about 125 of these great awards in existence on the planet. This priceless piece of Canadiana is being weighed, appraised and valued by countless eBay buyers.
It makes me sick.

Well, like David Emerson, to the victor goes the spoils.
It certainly sucks when someone or something which you think is invaluable becomes just a commodity.
Haven’t you ever been into one of those military memorabilia shops and seen all the medals on offer? I get the same feeling of disgust at seeing them bought and sold like that.

Awesome - it has been removed. :) Sound like it’s time for a follow-up post.
