Back Off Christians, The Christmas Tree Is Not Your Symbol!

December 14th, 2006 | by MadHacktress |

Okay, so here’s the thing…

Some nutso people seem to be of the impression that the so-called Christmas Tree has its origins in the Christian faith. The plain fact is that the tradition of a sacred tree is much older than the Christian faith and have been practiced for centuries before the Christians burst on to the scene.

Not only is the sacred tree ages older than Christianity, with roots in Germanic tribes, Norse traditions and various other very, very ancient practices. Charlotte, Queen Consort of King George III of the United Kingdom and Ireland, a woman of German birth, was credited with bringing the tradition to Britain; though only to the Royal Family for many years.

German settlers in the United States and the Anglophile elite, who were inclined to mimic British royalty, first brought the tree, according to documentation, around the turn of the 19th Century. The tree was not popularized until some time afterward. Perhaps the most famous tree in the world, the one at Rockefeller Center, has only been there for 69 years.
As with many other traditions the Christian faith as co-opted the sacred tree tradition from much more ancient origins. And, let’s be honest, haven’t they pretty much lost it, now, to a far more pervasive faith: commercialism.

The Christmas tree, at this point, really is a symbol of the Capitalist faith, more than anything else. It is a symbol of Macy’s, FAO Schwarz and various other very famous store window displays. When I think Christmas tree, I think Wal-Mart before I think baby Jesus.

So, I say to all these over-sensitive politically correct crazies: back-off the Christians and their desperate clinging to a symbol that’s not even really there’s (but don’t tell them that, they’ll pitch a fit).

If you need something to do with your end-of-year energy, how about we all work together to get rid of the damned carols that spew from every speaker in every public venue this time of year. As I walk through the malls I yearn for a resounding chorus of “I Have A Little Dreidel”.

If you want to do this just go to my blog and in one of the comments just write your blog name and the URL and I will add it to my site.

Thanks,
